Most of us have experienced some form of depression, whether it is mild and fleeting, or severe and lasting. These tips will get you feeling happier and like yourself again in no time.
Get natural light everyday. This is known as light therapy. Just feeling sunshine on your face gives you a feeling of happiness. The sunshine gives your body a seratonin boost that contributes to a sense of well being. Sunshine also gives your body vitamin D, a necessary vitamin that most people don’t get enough of.
In addition to getting natural light everyday, it is important to enjoy green spaces.
Natural, or green space is not just a luxury, it is essential to your health and well being. The more natural a person’s environment, the better they feel. People who can see plants and sunshine from their work space are more satisfied with their jobs and take fewer sick days than colleagues who don’t have a green view. People who work in their garden regularly are generally very happy people. Gardening, and sunshine seem to have an almost magical effect on the body. So get outside and start feeling happier!
Develop an attitude of gratitude.
Even the most pitiful person can be happy if they count their blessings. Gratitude does wonders for your outlook on life. It gives you perspective and helps you cope better with the situation. Oprah has talked about her gratitude journal many times on her talk show. She has encouraged everyone to have one. At the end of everyday write down at least one thing that you are grateful for. In hard times you can read your entries and gain strength from them. So write away, and feel happier!
Slow down – learn to live in the moment.
Too much of life is spent wishing for another time. You need to be consciously aware of every moment. The next time a pleasant moment arises, take a deep breath, close your eyes, and savor it. I call it “breathing in the moment”. Take a mental picture and write it in your gratefulness journal. So start today – slow down and breathe in the moment!
Find joy in the everyday simple things you do.
You need to rewire your thinking when it comes to work. Make it a goal to always think of the way your work benefits others, this will help it to not feel like such drudgery. So the next time you are scrubbing your toilet, try to think of how your family will benefit from your actions, and be happy!
Find a service you can do for others.
Service is the cure for depression. Service does not have to be expensive or require a lot of time. There are so many things you can do right in your own family. Wake up early and make them a hot breakfast, put an uplifting note in one of their lunch bags, or go out for one on one time. You could make a home cooked meal for the single mom, living across the street, or you could start a food or clothes drive for your local homeless shelter. Service is the biggest mood booster there is. If you are serving others it is very difficult to think about yourself and your own problems. Serve someone today, and feel happier!
Listen to uplifting music.
There are very few things as powerful as music. Music has the power to change moods, inspire new ideas, foster love, and even in some cases heal the body. Choose your music very wisely. Download some christian songs or some relaxing classical music. Pay attention to how you feel when you listen to it. If it does not uplift you and leave you feeling better, don’t listen to it. Download a playlist of all the songs that uplift you. Listen to it whenever you feel the blues coming on, and feel happier!
Go out with friends.
Going out with your friends can give you a sense of belonging and of unconditional support. Try this with someone else other than your partner. It is important that girls have “girl time” and guys have “guy time”. You can just relax, and act silly if you want to, and forget your problems for one night.
So practice these seven tips regularly to beat those blues!
